Then I understand (notions I learned after visiting the building) the request by the Vienna municipality at the time not to build it on the prestigious inner ring road the initial grant of the land to the building for a period of only ten years the definition given of "temple for tree frogs" due to the dome of gold leaves, by representatives of the conservative culture and other even more offensive definitions. I can imagine the effect that this palace had on the Vienna traditional culture in 1898, when it was inaugurated, through the effect it had on me: a building that doesn't resemble any other of those known to me so far. Since then I have improved my knowledge a little, and I have been able to trace to this cultural movement other architectures I knew, but without connecting them to such artistic movement for example the Dragon Bridge or some buildings in Ljubljana. So the vision of this building was a real revelation for me. I knew the name of Otto Wagner and - by foto - some of his works (but not the name of his pupil Joseph Maria Olbrich). The palace is indeed highly evocative.īefore seeing it (on my fourth trip to Vienna), I didn't know much about the architectural effects of the so-called “Secession” of which this building is a symbol. Look for the exit marked “Ausgang Secession”.The decision of the Austrian government since 2002, to reproduce this building on one side of the 0.50 euro coin, seems to me very wise. It’s quite a big subway station, so you want to leave the complex to the west. The U1, U2, and U4 subway lines all stop there. ![]() The Secession building is right next to Karlsplatz, a major subway station, so is well connected to the public transport system. ![]()
